The Interns Are Coming! - 06/21/2007

At NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the summer season begins with the summer solstice and the arrival of summer interns. This year, JPL's Education Office is providing opportunities for more than 200 students to participate in programs at the Lab. The academic levels range from high school through postdoctoral studies. The Minority Education Initiatives group will host more than 50 of these students, who will be participating in the Minority Initiatives Internship Program. This program serves as an umbrella for a group of programs targeting all students except those at the he postdoctoral level. The interns either attend Minority Serving Institutions or are a part of a population from which there is limited representation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers.

Blind JPL Student Intern Works on Mars-Bound Instrument - 02/05/2007

Not many teenagers can say they've worked on an instrument that will fly in space. Kelly Wills will be able to add that unusual accomplishment to his resume, after his experience working at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory this summer. The 18-year-old student from Middletown, Ohio, loves science and plans to major in engineering physics. His accomplishments and goals are even more remarkable because he wants to be a scientist even though he can't see.

Norman Ahmad has a really cool job working on a new lunar rover project. Currently he's working in the Robotics Hardware Group. He graduated from NASA's Minority University Research and Education Program or (MUREP) and received a full scholarship to attend Tennessee State through the NASA Scholars managed by the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME) to study mechanical engineering.
